Gaeilge24 - Craic agus Spraoi!

Ar an tríú lá déag de mhí Samhain…. No, I'm kidding! Of course I won't write in Irish. Maybe cúpla focal here and there though!

On November the 13th, Gaeilge 24 took place all over the country.  This is a challenge that requires students and teachers to speak Irish for a whole twenty four hours. Now, many of us were a little apprehensive about the challenge, because speaking Irish outside of Irish class for twenty four hours? No thanks!

Well… I decided to throw myself right in and do it, because why not? I didn’t think it would be that bad. We got t-shirts that said ‘Labhair Gaeilge Liom Inniu’ which means “Speak Irish to me Today”. We also got a wristband and a little booklet with phrases for the day.

To be completely honest,  I didn't think I'd be able to speak fluent Irish for the day, but it turned out to be a lot easier than expected! It seemed to come naturally to me and everyone else who participated, which was brilliant to hear! I suppose speaking Irish all day showed that it's an easy thing to do, and that we should try and add Irish into our daily lives.

After completing my 24 hours, I was still thinking “as Gaeilge”, and even speaking Irish to my parents! I hope to continue using the Irish language in my daily life,  because it's our culture and heritage and we need to keep Irish relevant to today's generation!

Maybe you could try and add cúpla focal in conversation with people, say slán instead of see you later,  and dia duit, instead of hi, because it's your language,  and your heritage,  and what makes our little island unique! As it says on my lovely wristband - “an Gaeilge, is leatsa í!”

Music Week took place during the week of the 21st of October. The week began with music being played in the atrium in the morning time and each student receiving Loreto Balbriggan’s annual Music Week Sticker. A competition took place which involved part of a song being played over the intercom each day. Students were invited to guess the song and maybe win a prize at the end of the week. There were pop up concerts taking place throughout the week performed by the students and staff members. Some of these performances included The Senior Choir, The Staff Choir, The Schools Ukulele Group, The School’s Dance Group, Class Groups and Solo Performers. The music students also had the opportunity to take part in an African Drumming Workshop on Monday. EU Contest for Young Scientist

Our Visit to the EU Contest for Young Scientists On Monday, the 17 th of September, a group of very lucky students from 1 st to 4 th year stood in the school courtyard, shivering with the cold, waiting to go to the EU Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS).  Ireland was very lucky this year to host this prestigious competition, and we were excited for it as well, despite the bitter cold as we stood waiting outside. Finally, warm coaches arrived to take us to the RDS, where the exhibition was being held. Our excitement began to build throughout the journey. The exhibition was better than we had hoped! We met some past – pupils on arrival, such as Diana Bura, Khadija Gull and Renuka Chintapalli. We strolled around the exhibitions all morning, marvelling at each project, and yearning to some day reach this impossibly high standard. Young Scientist Entrants 2021

  4th Year Entrants for BTYS The first of October brought about the application deadline for the Bt Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2021. This year the exhibition will take place virtually from January 6th to 8th. However, this didn’t stop our students from entering. We have seven total entries with 6 of them being 4th-year students.    Hiba Shahzad and Isabella Watts. Project Title: The Effects of ASMR on Stress Levels and Loneliness in Teenage Girls   This project will target students in our school, aged between twelve and eighteen years. Hiba and Isabella plan to show an ASMR related video to a select group of students. They will use a mindfulness video as their positive control and a non ASMR related video as their negative control to be shown along with the ASMR video to three separate groups. The pair will test the heart rate and temperature of the students before and after beginning exposed to the videos. They will also use the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) to survey st
